A great way to experience an “off pavement” adventure on your hybrid, dual sport, or gravel bike is on Rail Trails. Usually built on abandoned rail corridors, Rail Trails offer beautiful scenery, virtually no traffic (except at crossings), and are usually flat making these trails very family friendly.
A few of our favorites include The Sussex Branch and Paulinskill in Byram and Lafayette, The Columbia Trail, which runs from Flanders down to High Bridge, and the D&R Canal Path which runs 73.8 miles from New Brunswick, through Trenton, and then all the way to Washington’s Crossing.
The most popular stretch runs about 13 miles between Frenchtown and Lambertville. There is a matching trail across the Delaware on the Pennsylvania side of the river. You can make a nice day of it by riding from Frenchtown to Lambertville, crossing the river to New Hope, and then back up to Uhlerstown where a bridge takes you back to Frenchtown.
