Hello again, loyal readers! Your humble blogger has returned. The first few weeks of the season have been bustling so the blogging took a little pause, but I’m back to it. Watch this space for updates and posts in the coming weeks. To get back in the swing of things, I’ll start by telling you about an awesome organization working for us in NJ.
Let’s face it, the roads here in NJ aren’t always the safest for bicycles. Bike lanes aren’t exactly a common sight and our drivers have a bit of a reputation when it comes to “offensive” driving. Riding a bike or walking on or near the roads might not seem like a great idea at times. Sometimes when I get buzzed close by a car out on the road, I wonder if there’s anyone fighting for cyclists like me.
There is, and they were a lot closer to home than I thought.
The NJ Bike & Walk Coalition is just the organization I was hoping for, and Cycle Craft’s own Owner and General Manager Brendan Poh is on the Board of Directors. They’re working hard to make NJ a safer place for cyclists and pedestrians through advocacy and education initiatives.
The NJ Bike & Walk Coalition began in 2009, and has been working ever since to make our roads safer. Their core goals are to:
- Protect the rights of cyclists and walkers
- Promote cycling and walking for fun and fitness
- Educate cyclists, walkers, and drivers on their rights and responsibilities
- Connect communities with a smarter transportation system
One of the NJ Bike & Walk Coalition’s most important goals is to get the NJ State Legislature to pass the Three Foot Law. This law would require drivers to leave at least three feet of space when passing a cyclist or pedestrian on the road. I’ve been buzzed by cars enough times to know that this law is more than just a luxury. It’s a necessity. The NJBWC is working closely with legislators to get this law on the books.
Talking to the government isn’t all that the NJBWC does though. They also work directly with the people that really matter: cyclists and walkers like you!
Knowledge is power and the NJBWC’s Smart Cycling classes will empower cyclists of all levels. Taught by certified League Cycling Instructors, the classes cover everything from traffic laws to avoidance maneuvers. Check here for upcoming classes.
The NJBWC wants to make the roads safer for everyone, and they can’t do it without your help. Join today and get involved! Memberships start at just $20. If you can’t join but still want to help, you can donate as much as you can. Every little bit helps.
